1988 introduced us to many of our current political figures like Governor Sarah Palin
Why 1988? Why not? 1988 is a year that saw so many transitions from the old world into our modern technological world. Perestroika and Glasnost were on the lips of every Soviet mouth. It was the last year of the Reagan Presidency; signaling the beginning of the end of the Cold War, the rise of post Cold War global politics, large scale terrorist events, and a new kind of American politics. It was a year that introduced us to the Wonder Years, Roseanne, and the Koosh ball; a year where we missed our last chance to see Gilda Radner on the SNL stage due to the writer's strike. Donald Trump began a PR campaign that would eventually lead him into the White House. It was a year where the AIDS crisis was finally fully admitted by the government, and the Iran-Contra Crisis was hot on everyone's mind. 1988 saw the great heroes and legends of sports take the stage, saw Tom Hanks rise to the top, the Stealth Bomber, the Hubble telescope, and the end of Magnum PI. 1988 would give birth to Nirvana at the same time that the new Compact Disc would spell the commercial death of vinyl records. 1988 may be the most memorable year we will ever see again in terms of how it changed EVERYTHING. My students and I are pleased you have decided to take this journey with us, into the world of 1988. This is a collaborative school project that is designed to create a primary and secondary source archive for every possible aspect of one game changing year in American history. We have interviews with major 1988 movers and shakers, reviews of films, books, movies, and more. What are you waiting for? Put on your jellies, turn up the Full House reruns, and come explore a world that is as tubular as it is gnarly.
